The Ottawa Valley Stonekeepers Legacy Project is a community-driven non-profit initiative dedicated to preserving memory, history, and legacy through the restoration and documentation of memorial stones across the Ottawa Valley.
Every headstone tells a story. Behind each name lies a life lived, a family shaped, and a piece of local history that deserves to be remembered. Over time, weather, environmental damage, and neglect can cause these important markers to fade or deteriorate — placing generations of stories at risk of being lost forever.
The Legacy Project exists to ensure those stories endure.
Our Purpose
The Legacy Project was created to safeguard the historical and emotional heritage found within cemeteries and memorial sites throughout the Ottawa Valley. By carefully restoring monuments and preserving inscriptions, Ottawa Valley Stonekeepers helps reconnect families and communities with their past while protecting cultural history for future generations.
Cemeteries are more than resting places — they are outdoor archives of community history. The Legacy Project transforms preservation into an act of remembrance, education, and collective stewardship.
What the Legacy Project Accomplishes
Preservation of Local History
Through professional cleaning, stabilization, and conservation practices, deteriorating memorial stones are restored in a respectful and non-invasive manner. This work protects vital genealogical and historical information that might otherwise disappear.
Honoring Forgotten Legacies
Many graves no longer receive regular care due to distance, aging families, or lost connections. The Legacy Project ensures these individuals are not forgotten by restoring dignity and visibility to neglected memorials.
Community Connection
The project invites families, volunteers, and local organizations to participate in honoring loved ones and shared heritage. Restoration events and community initiatives create opportunities for remembrance, healing, and storytelling.
Education & Awareness
The Legacy Project raises awareness about cemetery preservation and proper monument care, helping communities understand the importance of protecting historical memorials using safe conservation methods.
Creating Lasting Records
Whenever possible, restored monuments are documented through photography and archival records, contributing to a lasting historical resource for families, researchers, and future generations.
A Living Legacy
The Ottawa Valley Stonekeepers Legacy Project is built on a simple belief: legacy should never fade with time.
Each restored stone represents more than preservation — it represents respect, remembrance, and continuity between generations. By caring for these memorials today, we ensure that tomorrow’s communities can still walk among the stories that shaped the Ottawa Valley.
Our Commitment
Ottawa Valley Stonekeepers approaches every project with compassion, professionalism, and deep respect for the families and histories entrusted to our care. The Legacy Project stands as an ongoing commitment to preserving heritage, honoring lives, and keeping memories visible for generations to come. To date we have preserved over 250 monuments.
